In the 1869s in Japan, a new era is dawning. During this time fraught with violent social upheaval, samurai of all wlaks if life flock to Kyoto in the hope of joining a band of warriors united around their undying loyalty to the Shoganate system. This group became one of the greatest (and most infamous) movements in Japanese history...the Shinsengumi!

Japan is approaching a tipping point, with increasing pressure from the West to ioen its borders. The Shinsengumi are being trained to use firearms, but Okita refuses, insisting on the way of the sword. He represents many in the group who cling to old samurai values. But it is clear that the times are changing and the Shinsengumi embodies the "old guard," Will they survive the coming upheavals?
